3165 Build Instructions
Tools: required
- ST-LINK V2
- Tag Connect ST-LINK adaptor
- Small flat head screwdriver
- Powered NMEA cable
Programming Instructions
- Connect the ST-LINK to the USB port of your computer
- Open STM32CubeProgrammer
- Connect the 3165 PCB to the NMEA cable. Ensure power is ON.
- Connect the Tag Connect Cable to the 3165 PCB and the ST-LINK programmer.
- Select the green 'Connect' Button
- Select the programming tab
- Select Browse, and open the bootloader BIN file from S:\Code\Production\3165 Rudder Angle Adaptor\3165Bootloader.bin - Program this first
Ensure verify programming and run programming boxes are ticked before proceeding</note>
- Press 'Start Programming'
- Log should read as follows; If it does not, then program the device again.
- You can now press disconnect in the top right and remove the TAG CONNECT cable from the board.
- Open Monex. MINIMUM MONEX VERSION is 3.13. If you are on a lower version you must update this from S:/Code/Published PC Programs/Monex3
- Press 'Get Prod Info' it should read Model ID: OCEANIC BOOTLOADER 3165-L4
- Go to the programming tab and press the reprogram button labelled 3165
- Press reprogram on the dialog that has just popped up
- Navigate to S:\Code\Production\3165.bin - Program this with Monex.
- Device will program, CRC will say 'PASS' and then it will read 'Re-booting to application code' You can now close the dialog
- Proceed to testing.
Test Procedure
- Connect the 3165 to a powered NMEA cable.
- Open Monex on your computer, MINIMUM MONEX VERSION is 3.13. If you are on a lower version you must update this from S:/Code/Published PC Programs/Monex3.
- Press 'Get Prod Info' it should read Model ID: Rudder Angle Sender
Device Instance Testing
- Set the Rotary switch to '0'.
- Vary the device instance by changing the value on the rotary switch
- Monitor the Device instance reported by Monex and make sure it matches the Rotary switch instance.
Rudder Angle Testing
- Connect a resistance box to the space connectors using a wire with a crimped ends on on end (crocodile clips can be used, though they are much more inaccurate.
- Go to the 'Rudder' tab on Monex, you should be able to see this (instance matching that on yor device):
- Set The resistance box to 10 Ohms
- The Rudder angle should be -45 degrees.
- IF THE BLUE LED DOESNT LIGHT IMMEDIATELY THEN TURN THE SUPPLY OFF AND STOP TESTING
- The Blue LED should turn on and stay on, wait approxmiately 10 seconds.
- Turn the supply off and wait for the Blue LED to turn off and return to normal operation (this can take up to 30 seconds)
- Connect a power supply to the pins on the PCB AS SHOWN BELOW, PAY ATTENTION TO THE POLARITY OF THE CONNECTION!
- Set the voltage to 1.0V, turn the supply on.
- IF THE BLUE LED DOESNT LIGHT IMMEDIATELY THEN TURN THE SUPPLY OFF AND STOP TESTING
- The Blue LED should turn on and stay on, wait for approximately 10 seconds.
- turn the supply off and wait for the Blue LED to turn off and return to normal operation (this can take up to 30 seconds).
- Set the voltage to 30 - 32V, turn the supply on.
- IF THE BLUE LED DOESNT LIGHT IMMEDIATELY THEN TURN THE SUPPLY OFF AND STOP TESTING
- The Blue LED should turn on and stay on, wait approxmiately 10 seconds.
Resistive Output Testing
* Connect a multimeter in resistance measuring mode across the 2 pins on the PCB
- Go to the 'Volumetric Mode'
- Under 'Level Transmit Controls' set the left most instance to '0' and the fluid type to 'FUEL', then click 'TxEnable'.
- Set the rotary switch to 'A' and put a magnet on the reed switch, the Blue LED should light for 2.5 seconds.
- Now return the rotary switch to '0', the Blue LED should be double flashing every 2.5 seconds.
- Change the level to transmit 100%, The measured resistance will state 30 Ohms
- Change the level transmit to 0%, The measured resistance will state 240 Ohms
- Change the level transmit 50%, The measured resistance will state 135 Ohms
- Now, set the rotary switch to 'F', the LED should be off and the measured resistance will be 30 Ohms
- Set the rotary switch to 'E', the LED should remain off and the measured resistance will be 240 Ohms.
- Set the rotary switch to 'E' and put a magnet on the reed switch, the Blue LED should light for 2.5 seconds.
- Now return the rotary switch to '0', the Blue LED should be single flashing every 2.5 seconds.
- Change the level to transmit 100%, The measured resistance will state 180 Ohms
- Change the level transmit to 0%, The measured resistance will state 0 Ohms
- Change the level transmit 50%, The measured resistance will state 90 Ohms
- Now, set the rotary switch to 'F', the LED should be off and the measured resistance will be 180 Ohms
- Set the rotary switch to 'E', the LED should remain off and the measured resistance will be 0 Ohms.
- Set the Rotary switch back to '0'.
TESTING COMPLETED, IF IN ANY DOUBT ASK DEV
Potting procedure
Before potting ensure PCB is flat and level to the casing.

Warm the compound on the heat plate (to approx 35/40°c), this takes approximately 5 minutes. Do not warm above this temperature as it will greatly reduce the pot life of the compound. Once warm, work the black potting BEFORE removing the clip and rail – this will help remove any lumps caused by the fillers that have settled over time. Then, put back on to the heat plate for 1 minute. Remove the clip and rail, and mix thoroughly for 2 minutes.
. Holding the bag vertically snip about 10 mm off the top corner at 45 degrees with a pair of scissors. Now drizzle the Epoxy over the circuit board to a level, taking care not to get any on the LED or Dial face. Allow to harden overnight. This will allow the mixture to settle.
The Potting must now be left for 24 hours to cure and harden.
After the units have been removed from the jig, remove any over spill from the jig so it is clean for the next use.
Once the epoxy potting has cured, the serial number label can be adhered to the potting top of the product as shown. Position carefully, the label is printed with: Product name and part number Serial Number Hardware and Software level. Connect to Monex and assign serial number to the units using the set serial function.
