Programming
Modbus to Nmea 2000 gateway flashing guide Connect the Modbus gateway to the Atmel AVR ISP via the 6 pin header labled PL2 on the Modbus gatew
The Pink Stripe on the Connector designates where pin one is located Connect the CAN Power source 12volt from the power supply
Open AVR Studio 5.1
Upon opening of AVR Studio 5.1 you will be greeted with these two screens After the program has loaded click “Tools” then “AVR Programming”
You will then see this screen
Select the tool you wish to use for programming your device, in this case we need to use the “AVRISP mkII” so make sure this is selected from the drop down menu.
Select the device you wish to use, in this case we are using the “Atmel AT90CAN64” so make sure this is selected from the drop down menu.
The interface we will to use is “ISP” (in system programming)
Then Click the Apply button.
After you have clicked Apply this window should now appear. Set the ISP Clock frequency to 125khz if not already set.
After the ISP Clock is set you when then need to click on fuses in the left hand menu
You shall then be greeted with this screen where we will need to change some values.
Check you have selected the required parameters then click the “Program” button
- Starting operation read registers
- Reading register EXTENDED…OK
- Reading register HIGH…OK
- Reading register LOW…OK
- Read register LOW…OK
- Read registers…OK
If everything went OK then this message should be output at the bottom of the AVR Programming window
After you have successfully set and programmed the fuses it is now the time to load the firmware onto the device. Now select the file to flash Click the memories tab
It will then open this dialogue. Select the latest version .hex file from the Modbus gateway folder and click “Open” Check you have selected the correct .hex file from the folder and that your settings are correct
If you are satisfied that the correct .hex file is selected and your fuse and settings are correct then we can proceed in
flashing the .hex file to the Atmel 90CAN64 Click “Program”
After Programming has completed you will be presented with this output at the bottom of the window You can now close AVR Studio 5.1 and turn off the CAN Power at the power supply you may now disconnect the CAN power source and the 6 pin AVR ISP plug from PL2 on the Modbus gateway.
Apply glue to the led's on board, then insert the yellow button.
Insert side (cut to size) panel and secure cable ties in position
Insert the front panel, final side panel check position is level
Click all other parts together partially then insert spring into orange clip and slide into position.
Finally Click all parts together.

Select Monex and set serial number the check Prod info.
Test Procedure
You Will Need:
- USB to RS-485 Converter
- Programmed 3155
- Small Flat-Head Screwdriver
- NMEA Power
- QModMaster Installed on your PC
If you do not have QModMaster downloaded, it is in S:/Downloads/QModMaster → Copy the .zip file into a seperate folder on your desktop and unzip inside the folder, then look for the 'Application File'.
Testing
Step 1
The USB to RS-485 should have the following Connections:
Connect the USB to RS-485 Converter to the 3155 screw in terminal blocks as shown, tighten with flat head screwdriver (not too hard).
Step 2
Plug in USB to RS-485 Converter into your PC.
Go into “device Manager” and confirm what COM port the device is on (The device will be called: Silicon Labs CP201x USB to UART Bridge)
Step 3
Power up the 3155 using the NMEA connector and 12V power supply
Step 4
Open Up QModMaster
In 'Options' → Modbus RTU Select the following settings:
Select the Serial Port that was shown in Device Manager!!!
Step 5
Select the Following Settings in QModMaster:
Modbus Mode: RTU
Slave Address: 16
Scan Rate: 1000
Function Code: Read Input Registers (0x04)
Start Address: 52 (Dec) (NOTE For 9011 this value shall be 46)
Number of Registers: 1
Data Format: Hex
Step 6
Step 7
Open Monex, then from the transmit controls on the left, press the “Tx Enable” button for the first sender.
Step 8
Click the Scan Button
A 4 digit number should appear in the big white box below, it should read 0000. Move the slider in Monex to 50 and it should read 30D4. Move the slider to 100 and it should read 61A8.
If a Values are received successfully then testing is completed
