3478 Build instructions

The 3478 PCB assembly contains components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD) – please make sure you are wearing your wrist strap when handling.

Last Modified on ~~LASTMOD~~ ===== Notes =====

Black o-ring must be removed from NMEA connector before fitting to case.

===== Assembly =====

Affix black label with see through panel for LED and cutouts for rotary switch to the black case shell.

Apply 3478 Silver label to the top of the unit.

Insert built PCB into the casing.

Add a dot of thread lock to base of connector thread, then do up the nut with 1/4 turn torque.

Glue base of unit on AFTER TESTING

When gluing base in place, ensure that the mounting holes line up as this only lines up one way around.

===== Programming =====

Setting the correct fuses for AVR ATmega64C1 device (Steps 1-5)

  1. Connect the programming device (White ATMEL USB programmer) to ISP interface of the 3478 device (pin header to pin socket adaptor cable is needed)
  2. Connect the NMEA2000 cable to the device, and ensure the power supply is on at 12V.
  3. Connect the programming device to a PC with AVR Studio (currently version 6.2)
  4. In AVR Studio select “Tools” → “Device Programming”, select the Tool you are using, press “Apply” and check the “Target Voltage” by pressing the “Read” button next to it. If the target voltage is less than 4.7 V, turn the SPI connector to opposite position.
  5. Interface Setting – click on the slider, enter 64kHz and set.
  6. Select the “Fuses” menu from the left panel and set up the following values (see the figure below): a. BODLEVEL = 2V7 b. SPIEN = Checked c. BOOTSZ = 2048W_7800 d. BOOTRST = Checked e. CKDIV8 = Unchecked f. SUT_CKSEL = EXTXOSC_8MHZ_XX_16KCK_14CK_64MS (last selection)
  7. Then press the “Program” button

  1. Select the main program by clicking on “Memories” menu on the left side.
  2. Push “…” button next to the path of the “Flash” file. Choose the hex file: “S:\Code\Production\3478 Relay Output Module\3478_AVR_BL_vx.x.x.hex”
  3. Press the “Program” button.
  4. Check the blue light is flashing.
  5. Remove the Atmel Programmer device
  1. Connect 3478 device to NMEA2000 network with only power supply and PC with PCAN-USB Adaptor connected.
  2. Hold magnet underneath the two rotary switches of the 3478 and toggle the power, the blue LED should now be constantly on, if it is not, repeat this step.
  3. Open Boot Loader (Flip)
  4. Select “Settings” → “Communication”→ “CAN” → “PEAK” Select 3.5 device select Atmel64C1
  5. Set “Bit Rate” to 250 Kbit/s and press “Init” then press “Connect” – this may take a few attempts
  6. Select “File” → “Load HEX File…” and select the file to flash from “S:\Code\Production\3478 Replay Output Module\3478v2.0.1.hex
  7. Then press “Run” (the button at bottom left) to programming the device.

===== Test procedure =====

Monex is not required for the functional testing of this unit. Device Info and Instance switch testing should still be completed.
  1. Close Flip, Atmel Studio and Monex.
  2. Open relay program at S:/Code/Published PC Programs/Relay Board Tester/x64/RelayBoardTester.exe
  3. Turn on all of the switches individually, check the green LEDs come in and you hear a switching noise.
  4. Each light should come on for its respective number
  5. Afterwards, use the “test all” button, this will trigger all relays and all LED’s
  6. Click “Auto test”- this will give a confirmation if successful.
  7. Close Relay Tester and open Monex
  1. Now, check each position of the instance switches respond using Monex
  2. Finally, apply a serial number to the unit using Monex.
