3420 Build Instructions

The 3420 PCB assembly contains components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD) – please make sure you are wearing your wrist strap when handling.

Programming Instructions

The process of programming the board is a two step process. First we program the bootloader onto the STM32 using the STM32CubeProgrammer. Then we program the 3420 Software using Monex.

You will need:

  • Monex3.11
  • STM32CubeProgrammer
  • Populated 3420 PCB
  • ST Link
  • NMEA2000 Network

Step 1

Connect the ST Link to the USB port of your computer

Step 2

Open STM32CubeProgrammer

Step 3

Connect the 3420 PCB to the NMEA cable. Ensure power is on (12V)

Step 4

Connect the ST Tag to CONN2 on the 3420 PCB.

Step 5

On the STM32CubeProgrammer select the green 'Connect' Button in the top right corner.

Step 6

Select the Programming Tab on the STM32CubeProgrammer

Step 7

Click 'Browse' and select the bootloader BIN file from S:\Code\Production\3420 AC Monitor\STM32 Based - Rev G onwards/3420-Bootloader.bin

Click 'Start Programming'

The LED on the 3420 PCB should light a solid green.

Step 8

Open Monex, Minimum version of Monex is 3.11, If you are on a lower version you must update this from S:\Code\Published PC Programs\Monex3…..

Step 9

Press the 'Get Prod Info' it should read Model ID: 'Oceanic Bootloader 3420-L4'

Step 10

Go to the AC Monitor tab on Monex and press the 'Reprogram' button.

Step 11

Select S:/Code/Production/3420 AC Monitor/STM32 Based - Rev G onwards/3420.bin

No wait for device to finish programming. The Led should now be flashing blue

Programming Successful, you can now disconnect the ST Link

Testing Instructions

The 3420 Testing process involves HIGH VOLTAGE, Make sure to disconnect power when handling connections, and stay away from PCB, Variac and Test Box when power is turned on!

The Process of testing the 3420 involves connecting the 3420 PCB to the 3420 Test Box, and altering the voltage using a Variac. Throughout the whole process, TAKE YOUR TIME AND DO NOT HANDLE WHEN POWER IS CONNECTED TO THE TEST BOX.

You will need:

  • Monex3.11
  • Programmed 3420
  • NMEA2000 Network
  • 3420 Test Box
  • Variac
  • Electric Tape

Step 1

Connect the 3420 Test box wires to the Deutsch connector wires as follows:

The Black Neutral wire labelled 'N' on the test box must be connected to the Single Black wire on the Deutsch connector with the crocodile clip.

Step 3

The Red Live wire labelled 'L' on the text box must be connected to the thick Red, Pink and Purple wires on the deutsch connector using the crocodile clip.

Step 4

The Black Current transformer output wire on the test box must be connected to the 3 black wires using crocodile clips.

Step 5

The Red Current transformer output wire on the test box must be connected to the Yellow, While and Blue wires on the deutsch connector using crocodile clips.

Step 6

Wrap Electric Tape around the crocodile clips to ensure an insulated connection.

Step 7

Connect the Variac to a plug socket and connect another plug to the Transformer output.

DO NOT CONNECT THE PLUG TO THE AC TEST BOX

Step 8

Push the Deutsch Connector into the 3420 PCB until both sides of the connector click tight.

Step 9

Connect the 3420 PCB to the NMEA cable. Ensure power is on (12V)

Step 10

Connect the Variac to the 3420 Test box, Making sure the Variac is OFF

Turn the dial of the Variac to 0V, do not turn the Varic on yet!

Step 11

Make sure none of the crocodile clips are close to each other and ARE NOT TOUCHING

Step 12

On Monex click the 'Get Prod Info' Tab, in the Model ID you should read 'AC Monitor'

Now go to the AC Monitor Tab, you should see:

On the AC Monitor Tab:

Change Set Parameter to 'Circuit Type'

Change Circuit Type to 'Three Phase'

Click 'Send'

All Phases should stop being unavailable and say '0', the frequency should say 49.9.

Step 12

MAKE SURE ALL CONNECTIONS ARE ACCURATE BEFORE TURNING POWER ON

Turn on the Variac Power, the Blue LCD display on it should state the voltage.

Turn the Dial to output 25V.

The Phase A, B and C Line-Neutral Voltages should be approximately 31V

Phase A, B, C Current should be approximately 1.2A

Step 13

Turn the Variac Dial to 125V

Keep away from the PCB, AC Test Box and PCB when power on.

The Phase A, B, C Line-Neutral Voltages should be approximately 129V

The Phase A, B, C Current should be approximately 5.3A

Step 14

Turn the Variac Dial to 250V

Keep away from the PCB, AC Test Box and PCB when power on.

The Phase A, B, C Line-Neutral Voltages should be approximately 251V

The Phase A, B, C Current should be approximately 10.4A
